LAKKI MARWAT: A policeman was injured in an attack on a police checkpost in Shaikh Landak area of Bannu district on Thursday night.
A police official said that a group of militants attacked the police post with heavy weapons in a bid to take over it. He said the cops responded effectively.
The official said armed villagers also came out of their houses when they heard intense firing and assisted police in repulsing the attack.
“An intense exchange of fire continued for some time, forcing the assailants to flee,” he said, adding the wounded cop was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital, where his condition is stated to be stable.
Bannu district police officer Ziauddin Ahmed praised the bravery of policemen and rewarded them with cash prizes. During a visit to the police post on Friday, he said the area elders helped the policemen foil the terror attack.
In Lakki Marwat, a police constable, who embraced martyrdom in Thursday’s terror attack, was laid to rest at a graveyard in his native village with full official honour on Friday.
Funeral prayers of the martyred police official, Habibur Rehman were offered at the police lines. Deputy commissioner Zeeshan Abdullah, DPO Mohammad Jawad Ishaq, relatives, elders and people from different walks of life attended the funeral.
A police contingent presented a salute to their fallen colleague, while officials of the district administration and police department placed floral wreaths on his coffin.
