GILGIT: Two people were killed and four were injured when a passenger jeep fell into a ravine after skidding off the road due to snow in Astore district of Gilgit-Baltistan on Tuesday.

According to police, the jeep carrying six passengers was going to Astore from Danil village on Tuesday, when it skidded off the road, which had a thick layer of snow, and fell into a ravine.

One passenger was kiled on the spot, while five were seriously injured.

Rescue teams shifted the injured to Astore district headquarters hospital. Later, two of the seriously injured passengers were shifted to Gilgit.

Tourists advised not to use Astore valley road

One of the two injured persons taken to Gilgit, succumbed to his injuries. The names of the victims could not be known.

Police officials said that all victims were relatives and belonged to the Astore district.

Several areas of Gilgit-Baltistan received heavy snowfall on Tuesday, making road travel dangerous.

Astore and Ghizer areas have remained cut off from other parts of GB as intermittent snowfall has been continuing in these areas for the last three days.

Roads in Astore, Ghizer, Shigar, Ghanche, Hunza and Nagar have also become dangerous for travel because of the heavy snowfall.

A press release issued by Astore district administration advised tourists and general public to avoid unnecessary travel on Astore valley road as there was a strong possibility of more snowfall in the next few days.
